Destinations

The Dominican Republic is a Caribbean country that occupies a major part of Hispaniola Island, sharing borders with Haiti, on the west. To the north lies the North Atlantic Ocean and to the south lies the Caribbean Sea.

This country is a colourful blend of Spanish, French, Haitian, and African influences and a rich history. In addition to the dazzling beaches and waters, the Dominican Republic also offers dazzling inland landscapes, exotic cuisine, and a great diversity of arts and entertainment options.

REASONS TO GO

Amazing crystal water beaches and lush rainforests.

World class resorts for good value.

Colourful music, great food and friendly people.

ORIENTATION

The most popular destinations on the south are Punta Cana and La Romana, with large white sand beaches, crystal clear water and all inclusive resorts.

Further south west, the capital city Santo Domingo also has some beaches and also some beautiful historical buildings.

North-central Cabarete is quite popular among kite boarders and windsurfers.

BEST TIME TO GO

The weather in the Dominican Republic is tropical maritime, being very warm and with little changing from season to season. Average temperatures range between 78 and 88 degrees Fahrenheit. From late June to late September it’s the storm (and hurricane) season, and it gets heavily hot and humid. From November to April is probably the best time to visit.

HOW TO GET THERE

The Dominican Republic has a total of eight international airports throughout the country:

Las Americas International Airport (serves Santo Domingo); La Isabela International Airport (serves Santo Domingo); La Romana International Airport; Punta Cana International Airport; El Catey International Airport (serves Samana); Gregorio Luperon International Airport (serves Puerto Plata); Santiago International Airport.

The best way to get from the airports to your final destination is by taxi.

TRAVELLING AROUND

To travel around the country you can choose from bus service, 'gua-guas' (small vans or trucks used as a collective taxi), domestic air flights and charter air service.

Caribe Tours is the biggest bus company and connects most regions.

Another option is the Metrobus bus company which serves the northern and eastern part of the country.

Taxi services are also available but be aware of the unlicensed drivers.
